Did writing to Casting Directors, Agents and industry professionals change when the clock struck 12 on the 1st January?
Lots of people after the stroke of midnight have great fun with the sentence “that’s the first time I’ve said that this year.” The fact is, nothing’s really changed. In fact, writing to industry professionals this year is much the same as last.
All of the same caveats apply.
Think innovatively and differently - So many people send the same old CV and headshot. Try not joining the pile of unread submissions by thinking outside of the box. Apply the same principles that allow you to stand out as a performer and give the same weight and thought to how you write to industry professionals. What designs could you use to make yourself stand out? Is there something creative you can do with your CV or information?
Length is important – Unfortunately, nobody is interested in spending fifteen minutes reading your life story and recent credits, experiences that you’ve had recently with specific directors or industry professionals. It’s far more important to keep it short, concise. Although, if you are writing for representation, any links with the agents from directors or their other clients, could be useful.
Be polite and friendly - So many people forget this one and it’s the most important, by far. Being polite and friendly in your writing style shows your personality and demonstrates that you are reliable and will give a good impression in castings and auditions. The slightest sentence structure or word can send something that you feel is polite and courteous into arrogance or conceitedness.
Keep up to date with the industry - thanks to blogs, Twitter, Facebook and the internet in general, this is easily achievable for just five minutes every day. You don’t have to be invited to industry parties or know famous producers now to be an ‘insider’ with knowledge. You can get all of the information you need with just a few clicks. Keeping informed and being able to talk about what’s going on could serve you well this year.
From all of us at Already Labelled, a very happy new year and I hope it brings prosperity and wonderful things to you.
